Sailing Class


5-9 years old

Beginner

Explorers

This class is designed to give young children an early and controlled introduction to the world of sailing while on a butterfly or Opti sailed by an instructor.  Boat parts, basic knots and nautical terms and water safety will be taught. The sailor/instructor ratio will be no more that 2 to 3 sailors per instructor. Parents will receive a postcard after each session noting skills mastered, and sailors will receive a photo.


6+ years old

Beginner/Intermediate

Opti

This class is designed for the sailor who has completed Beginners or has had previous sailing experience. The sailors will build on their knowledge of boat parts, points of sail, wind direction and water safety. At the successful completion of this class a sailor will be able to rig a boat and single-hand an Opti independently and with confidence. 5 minute swim test required. Parents will receive a postcard after each session noting skills mastered, and sailors will receive a photo.


7+ years old

Beginner

Butterfly 1

In this introduction to sailing, students learn the basic theory and terminology of sailing and begin to build a foundation of skills.The sailor will be sailing a butterfly with an instructor on board. The sailor/instructor ratio will be no more that 2 sailors per instructor. At the completion of this class and the recommendation of the instructor the sailor will be ready to sail with a partner on an Opti or Butterfly. 5 minute swim test required. Parents will receive a postcard after each session noting skills mastered, and sailors will receive a photo.


9+ years old

Beginner/Intermediate

Butterfly 2

This class is for older, experienced Opti sailors ready to move on to the faster butterfly, and for older children with some previous sailing experience. The sailors will build on their basic boat handling, seamanship and boating safely while sailing with a partner or single handed. 5 minute swim test required. Parents will receive a postcard after each session noting skills mastered, and sailors will receive a photo.


10+ years old

Intermediate/Advanced

Adventure Sailing

For those sailors seeking to expand their horizons, but who are not interested in Race Team. We are not all racers! The Adventure Sailing class will improve sailors skills in a non-competitive and adventurous atmosphere. Open to sailors who are comfortable sailing a boat on their own or with a partner. Parents will receive a postcard after each session noting skills mastered, and sailors will receive a photo.

Advanced

Racing

We have divided our race program into a Learn to Racing Skills course, and a Regatta Race Team. You are welcome to sign up for one or both, depending on how much time you would like to spend on the water. SLJSA has been very competitive in the WMYSA series over the past two summers and we are looking forward to having a competitive team again this summer! 


12+

Beginner/Intermediate

420 Camp

This class is for high school aged kids who are looking to prepare for the high school sailing team. 


Adult (16+)

Beginner

Adult Lessons - 4 evenings

Adults can learn to sail, too! This class is for adults interested in learning to sail, becoming more comfortable steering a boat, as well as moving toward skippering or crewing in a race.


Any age/experience!

Private Lessons

 One on one instruction scheduled at a convenient time for both the sailor and the instructor. Learn to sail your own boat or use our fleet. Family and group lessons are also available.
